At the altar, you have your back to your guests for most of the ceremony. Your back is what they see as you walk down the aisle, as you say your vows, as you exchange rings. An open-back wedding dress turns that moment into an entrance: a deep V, a rounded cut-out, a lace-up corset, lace laid on bare skin. Here is how to choose yours, and how to wear it without thinking about it.
- There are at least six back styles: V, scoop, keyhole, crossed straps, halter and lace-up, plus the illusion back in tulle.
- Support comes from the dress itself: built-in cups, boning and a corset replace the bra.
- The more open the back, the more precise the fit must be: a dress made to your measurements does not gape.
- For a church, a bolero, stole or long veil covers the back during the service.

Six back styles
"Open-back wedding dress" actually covers very different cuts. Each one draws its own line, shows more or less skin and needs a different kind of support.
| The back | What it shows | Support | The look |
|---|---|---|---|
| V back | A point that drops between the shoulder blades or to the waist | Good if the V stays moderate | Long and lean |
| Scoop | A low, rounded curve | Good with wide straps | Soft, romantic |
| Keyhole or cut-out | An opening framed by fabric | Very good: the top stays closed | Discreet, graphic |
| Crossed straps | Straps that cross over bare skin | Good, the straps hold the dress | Light, summery |
| Halter | The shoulders and the whole back, tied at the neck | Medium: everything rests on the neck and bust | Sculptural, very modern |
| Lace-up | Skin between the eyelets of a corset | Excellent, adjustable on the day | Couture, fairytale |
The illusion back works with all of these: skin-tone tulle, embroidered with lace or lined with buttons, gives the effect of an open back while covering it. It is often the best option for a religious ceremony or a fuller bust.
How much to reveal
Suggested
An illusion back or a small keyhole. Skin shows through, the silhouette stays covered: ideal for church.
Revealed
A V or a scoop that stops mid-back. The right balance between elegance and support.
Bold
A back open to the waist, a halter. Spectacular, and it needs a perfectly fitted dress.
The silhouette matters too. An open-back mermaid follows the whole line of the body (see our mermaid wedding dress guide); a ball gown with a scoop back stays romantic thanks to the volume of the skirt. To compare cuts, see our wedding dress silhouettes guide.

Support and what to wear underneath
The real question with an open back is: what holds me in? The answer lies in how the dress is built, not in a bra.
- Moulded cups sewn into the lining.
- Soft boning at the sides and front.
- A corset or a defined waist that anchors the dress.
- For a very low back: an adhesive bra or a low-back bodysuit, tried with the dress.
At your fitting, raise your arms, lean forward, sit down: the top should not gape and the straps should not slip. If you plan to dance a lot, a lace-up or crossed back holds better than a halter.
An open back is less forgiving than a closed one: two centimetres too many and the fabric gapes. That is why our dresses are cut from your measurements. Follow our guide on how to measure for a made-to-measure dress: five measurements are enough.
Church, town hall, season
In a church, it is customary to cover the shoulders and back during the service. A lace bolero, a stole or a long veil settles it; you take them off for the reception. Our comparison cape, bolero or shawl helps you choose. At the town hall, there is no rule: an open back is welcome, see our civil wedding dress guide.
In winter, plan a cape for outdoor photos and keep the back bare indoors, under the chandeliers, where it catches the most light.
Everyone remembers the first look. They also remember the last image: you, from behind, at the altar.
Veil, hair and jewellery
The veil should not hide the back, it should frame it. Fix it under the bun rather than on top of the head: it then falls along the spine and shows the cut. A plain tulle veil, with a simple edge or fine lace, is the safest choice. Every length is in our veil length guide.
- Hair: a low bun, a braid or hair swept over one shoulder to free the neckline.
- Jewellery: earrings that move, or a very fine back necklace. Nothing heavy.
- Photos: ask your photographer for a shot from behind in the aisle and a three-quarter shot at the altar.

Your questions
What bra do you wear with an open-back wedding dress?
Usually none: a well-built open-back dress has moulded cups and boning that hold the bust. Otherwise, an adhesive bra or a low-back bodysuit. Always try it on with the dress, never separately.
Can I wear an open-back wedding dress in a church?
Yes, by covering the back during the service: a lace bolero, a stole or a long veil is enough. Our church wedding dress code guide explains the customs.
Can you wear an open-back dress with a larger bust?
Yes. Choose a moderate V, a lace-up back or an illusion back: the corset and the skin-tone tulle leave room for real support. A back that is fully open to the waist needs more structure at the front.
Which veil goes with an open-back dress?
A plain tulle veil, fixed under the bun, that falls down the back without hiding it. A cathedral veil frames the back along its whole length. Every length is explained in our veil length guide.
Hair up or down with an open back?
Up, or swept over one shoulder: a low bun or a ponytail shows the line of the back, which is the dress's best feature. Loose hair partly hides it.
Does an open-back dress work for a winter wedding?
Yes, with a cape, bolero or stole for outdoors and photos outside. Indoors, the open back stays very elegant. See our ideas in the winter cover-ups guide.
