In short: many churches, especially Catholic and Orthodox ones, still expect the bride's shoulders to be covered during the ceremony and prefer a modest neckline. You do not need a different dress: a bolero, a cape or a shawl covers you for the ceremony and comes off for the reception. A veil or a lace mantilla is traditional but rarely required. Always ask your priest or officiant first.

What churches usually ask

Rules vary by denomination, by country and even by parish, but the most common expectations are:

  • Covered shoulders during the ceremony (sometimes covered arms).
  • No very low neckline or open back in view of the congregation.
  • A modest length: a long dress is the norm.
  • In some traditions, a covered head: a veil, a mantilla or a headpiece.

Protestant and civil ceremonies are usually more relaxed. The only way to know is to ask, ideally at your first meeting with the officiant.

How to cover a strapless or backless dress

You do not have to give up the dress you love. Three options, from the most covering to the lightest:

The mantilla is a Spanish lace veil worn over the head and shoulders, traditionally with no comb or with a high comb. It is beautiful for a Catholic ceremony and doubles as head covering.
